Thurle Wright

tell me a story 2025

Underlying all Thurle's recent work is a fascination with the ancient connection between text and textile and in the importance of language, story and craft in fostering cultural identity,

In her meticulous, labour-intensive works with paper cut from old books, Thurle rearranges or 'recrafts' existing texts into new and elaborate cloth-like formats. Her works aim to reconnect the link between the creative process of writing and that of constructing a textile. Drawing on personal experiences of literature, Thurle playfully alludes to the history of language, its complexity, fallibility and entanglement with culture. These text-textile pieces ask viewers to read between the lines, and find alternative connections between text, texture and memory.

Originally from Zimbabwe, Thurle studied and taught modern languages and literature in Australia and the UK before specialising in visual art. She studied Fine Art Textiles at Goldsmiths College and a Masters in Fine Art at UCA Canterbury. Thurle works from her studio in Folkestone's Creative Quarter.

Thurle's work has been exhibited widely both in the UK and internationally. including the Craft Council's Collect (with Jaggedart London), Art in Romney Marsh, Strange Cargo, Folkestone Triennial Fringe, Bookarts Triennial in Lithuania, Deptford X, Gallery East in Perth, and both Brussels and New York Art on Paper Fairs. Numerous residencies include work for the V&A Museum of Childhood, Perth Central School of Art and Design, Fremantle Arts Centre, Camberwell Arts and various schools and colleges in the UK.  Her work is held in public and private collections including Brisbane State Library.
