playful 2024

Sue Hurman creates whimsical characters with distinct and varied personalities.

With a background in archaeological illustration her attention to detail is apparent in the tiny stitches, painted patterns and the delicate carving of the Japanese paperclay she utilises to bring her figures to life.

Whether she is creating a sardonic bear, a wistful beast or an enigmatic performer, her sculptures are inspired by ancient artefacts and the inherent magic of the everyday. Bodies made of cloth are both machine stitched and hand sewn, then adorned with ornament and colour. Heads are sculpted from clay and treated with watercolour to create soft delicate tones.

Materials are varied and carefully selected to enhance and capture the individuality of each piece, every one a unique labour of love and imagination.
