Jennifer works from her studio on the edge of Dartmoor, South Devon, a special part of the world where pockets of temperate rain forest feed a rich tapestry of mosses, lichens, oaks, fruits, seeds and rocks. Inspired by the ancient potters who remained closely attuned to their natural environment, Jennifer weaves Dartmoor’s unique colours, textures and character into her work. Her vessels strike a delicate balance between tradition and innovation, in tune with the historical yet ever changing landscape.

The vessels are hand built from black, red or white stoneware clays, using an ancient coiling technique to evoke the textures of the natural world.  The form of each vessel grows organically as the soft clay walls are pinched and pushed, creating rivulets and craters. This highly tactile, unhurried making process explores the connection between the human-made and naturally formed, resulting in work reflecting our symbiotic relationship with nature.

The surface of each piece is carefully built up with different combinations of slips and glazes. A natural colour palette is achieved through the use of earth’s metal oxides. This procedure also allows for the impressions formed by the coiling process to be accentuated, as the thin glazes pool into the hollows. The combination of colour and texture creates an earthy, tactile surface to the poised and light forms, echoing the contradictory spirit of Dartmoor itself. The work is not an attempt to reproduce nature, but rather to capture its essence.

Jennifer holds an MA in ceramics from The Royal College of Art. Prior to this she gained a first-class honours degree from West Surrey College of Art and Design. On leaving college, Jennifer was awarded a Crafts Council ‘Setting Up’ grant, and her ceramics is featured in exhibitions and private collections worldwide.
