Helen McNiven

playful 2024

"My first driftwood angel was inspired by the modest, humble humanity of wooden Crucifixions I saw made by local craftsmen in rural Tuscan churches.

Angels are largely unseen and in the spirit of the "object trouve" each angel is dictated by the wood I find which has been transformed and shaped over time by the elements.

My angels by their nature and association are intimate and mysterious, some are flying, some ascending.

Some say they bring hope or comfort, others enjoy them simply as rhythmic driftwood sculptures transcending time.

Understated and lightly there, watching over us...a gentle presence."

Helen McNiven gained a BA (hons) in Fashion and Textiles from Kingston University and worked as a freelance designer before opening a small Childrens' wear shop in Surrey. She taught Art and Design for 20 years and made her first driftwood angel in 1994.

The angels have sold privately all over the world, but she has recently exhibited them at The Table Hay on Wye, and this summer she was selected for an installation at Wells Cathedral as part of Wells Art Contemporary.

All the Angels are sold for Charity.
