Donna Rumble-Smith

tell me a story 2025

Donna Rumble-Smith is an artist based in Lutterworth, Leicestershire. ‘Stories’ and stitch are at the heart of her practice, including the use of different media to convey each story. Handwriting styles and a love of words and titles inspire her, as do techniques and materials that support each concept. Stories take the form of memories, reflections, observations about life, letters of love and loss, poems, and words that connect to asemic writing.

Donna uses her textiles-based skills, techniques and experiments, carefully selecting paper and thread noted for their various qualities and behaviours. Lifting the thread, she picks at the stitching, allowing it to shape into what might appear to be words. Her stitched handwritten lace plays with light, casting shadows and creating ‘conversation’. Her interest in moving images include notions of the presence and absence of the writer.

Having studied embroidered textiles at Manchester Polytechnic, Donna has worked in Art and Design education in secondary schools. After completing her Masters degree, she continued to teach at Nottingham Trent University at both masters and degree levels whilst contributing to textile research. She has sold her art internationally and has worked on private commissions, working from her home studio in Leicestershire. Donna creates framed artwork, installations, and books.
